Barrow grew rapidly after haematite iron ore was found in 1850, and by 1876 its steelworks were the largest in the world; shipbuilding followed, and today’s shipyard builds submarines for the Royal Navy. The town centre is laid out on a planned grid of Victorian terraced streets, alongside sandstone villas, the listed Ship Street tenements and the Vickers-built garden village of Vickerstown on Walney Island. Those terraces usually have a single straight flight, while villas and tenements need more careful measuring.

Stairlifts at the Tip of the Furness Peninsula
Barrow sits at the tip of the Furness peninsula between the Duddon Estuary and Morecambe Bay, sheltered from the Irish Sea by Walney Island. Much of the town is level, so the staircase inside is usually the main obstacle. From the terraces near the Dock Museum to Vickerstown and homes out towards Furness Abbey, our surveyor will measure your stairs and recommend the right stairlift, with a fixed written price.
