Carlisle began as the Roman settlement of Luguvalium, which supplied the forts along Hadrian’s Wall, and as a border city its castle was besieged many times and held Mary, Queen of Scots in 1568. The historic core is built largely of local red sandstone, while districts such as Denton Holme, Caldewgate and Botchergate are dominated by late Victorian terraced housing, much of it brick with slate roofs. We measure every staircase in person before recommending a stairlift.
