Wigan stands on the site of the Roman settlement of Coccium and later grew into a mill town at the heart of a large coalfield; George Orwell’s The Road to Wigan Pier made its working conditions famous in 1937. The borough has a mixed housing stock, with terraced homes common in the older towns, semi-detached houses around Orrell and more detached homes towards Standish and Shevington. Each brings a different staircase, so we measure every one before recommending a stairlift.
