Nelson takes its name from the Lord Nelson Inn, after which the railway station was first called when the line opened in 1849. The railway turned the area into a cotton weaving town, and most of its terraced streets went up in a rapid burst of building between about 1860 and 1890. Those Victorian mill-workers’ terraces, built in local Pennine sandstone with Welsh slate roofs and often fronting straight onto the pavement, still dominate the town and usually have narrow, steep staircases.
