Sir John Lowther obtained a market charter in 1660 and from the 1680s laid out a grid of streets, turning a fishing village into a coal and tobacco port. That makes Whitehaven one of the first planned towns in England, with over 170 listed buildings and Georgian terraces such as Scotch Street, where houses were built three storeys high. Tall town houses mean long staircases and landings, so we measure every flight before recommending a stairlift.

Stairlifts for a Harbour Town Between the Hills
Whitehaven is a harbour town on the north-west Cumbrian coast, about four miles outside the Lake District National Park, hemmed in by steep valley sides and the cliffs south of the harbour. Some homes on the slopes have steps outside as well as stairs inside, so we can supply outdoor stairlifts alongside indoor models. From streets near The Beacon Museum and The Rum Story to Hensingham and Kells, our surveyor will look at every set of steps you use.
