Stockport was a hatting centre from the 17th century, exporting more than six million hats a year by 1884, and its great railway viaduct, built from around 11 million bricks, still carries the West Coast Main Line across the Mersey valley. Housing ranges from terraces near the town centre to large Victorian villas in suburbs such as Heaton Moor, where much of the housing was built between 1852 and 1892 after the railway arrived. Staircases vary just as much, so every home gets its own survey.

Stairlifts Around the Mersey Valley
Stockport stands on raised sandstone ground where the rivers Goyt and Tame meet to form the River Mersey, so parts of the town sit on slopes above the valley. From streets in sight of the viaduct and the Hat Works museum to the villas of the Heatons and homes out in Marple and Romiley, we see every kind of staircase. Where external steps are a problem, we can also supply outdoor stairlifts.

Everything you need to know about buying, fitting and maintaining a stairlift in Stockport.
How much does a stairlift cost in Stockport?
Reconditioned straight stairlifts cost from £1,595 and new straight stairlifts from £2,495. Curved stairlifts cost from £3,395 reconditioned and from £4,995 new. All prices are fully installed and include VAT, and every quote is free, written and fully itemised. See our full stairlift price guide.
Do you cover the Heatons, Marple and Hazel Grove?
Yes. We cover the whole borough, including Heaton Moor, Heaton Chapel, Heaton Mersey, Heaton Norris, Hazel Grove, Marple, Romiley, Bredbury and Woodley. We also have a separate page for Cheadle and Bramhall.
Is a stairlift VAT-exempt?
Yes. Stairlifts are zero-rated for VAT when supplied to a person with a disability or long-term illness. We handle all the required VAT relief paperwork for you at no extra charge.
Can you fit a stairlift in a large Victorian villa?
Yes. Longer, turning staircases suit a made-to-measure curved stairlift, which can be designed to stop at the landing you need. Our surveyor will measure every flight.
Will a stairlift work during a power cut?
Yes. All stairlifts we supply include battery backup, keeping you mobile during power cuts. Batteries recharge automatically when the lift is parked at a charging point.
Can I get a Disabled Facilities Grant in Stockport?
Disabled Facilities Grants in Stockport are handled by Stockport Council and can help eligible residents with the cost of a stairlift. We can provide the written quote the council asks for.
