A meeting of kings from across Britain, including Athelstan, is recorded near Eamont Bridge in 927, and Penrith Castle was built in red sandstone in the early 1400s. Locally quarried red sandstone still gives the town its distinctive look, and much of the older housing is sandstone townhouses and terraces built over two or three storeys. Taller homes mean longer staircases and landings, so we measure every flight before recommending a stairlift.
