Mary, Queen of Scots spent her first night in England at Workington Hall in 1568, and the town later became a centre of iron and steel, with the world’s first large-scale Bessemer steelworks opening at Moss Bay. The older centre around Portland Square and Curwen Street keeps two and three storey houses from the late 18th and early 19th centuries, while many outer districts were built as housing estates. Staircases vary a great deal between the two, so we measure every one in person.
