New vs Reconditioned Stairlifts: Which Is Better Value?

Updated October 2026 · 6 min read · By the Stairlift For You team

Key points

  • A reconditioned stairlift is a used lift that has been refurbished and safety tested before it is fitted in your home.
  • Reconditioned straight lifts cost from £1,595 fitted, compared with £2,495 new.
  • Ours come with a 3-year parts and labour warranty when new and 2 years when reconditioned, and either can be extended to 5 years.
  • Buy new for the latest models, the widest choice of options, or heavy duty and outdoor lifts.

What is a reconditioned stairlift?

A reconditioned stairlift is one that has been used before, removed, and then refurbished. Worn parts are replaced, the lift is cleaned and tested, and it is fitted on a rail cut to suit your stairs.

It is not the same as a second-hand lift bought privately. A private sale usually comes with no safety check, no fitting and no warranty, and a stairlift installed by someone without the right training can be dangerous. We do not recommend it.

The case for reconditioned

  • It costs less. A reconditioned straight lift starts at £1,595, against £2,495 for new.
  • It can be fitted quickly. Straight lifts can often be installed within a few hours.
  • It is still well covered. Ours carry a 2-year parts and labour warranty, which you can extend to 5 years.
  • It suits shorter-term needs. If a lift may only be needed for a few years, reconditioned keeps the outlay down.

Popular reconditioned models include the Acorn 130, the Handicare 1100 and the Handicare 1000. See all our reconditioned stairlifts.

The case for new

  • The latest models. New lifts have the manufacturer’s current design and features.
  • More choice. You can choose seat style, upholstery, powered swivel and powered footrest options.
  • Specialist lifts. Heavy duty, outdoor and some curved models are usually only available new.
  • A longer life ahead. If you expect to use the lift for many years, new gives you the most time from the start.

Some curved models, such as the Handicare Freecurve, are usually supplied new.

Are reconditioned stairlifts safe?

Yes, when they are refurbished, tested and fitted properly. Every reconditioned lift we fit is safety tested before installation, and our engineers check it again in your home before showing you how to use it. Ask any supplier what testing has been done, who will fit it, and what the warranty covers.

Which should you choose?

For a straight staircase and a standard user weight, a reconditioned lift is usually the best value. Choose new if you have a curved staircase with limited reconditioned stock, need a heavy duty or outdoor lift, or want particular options.
