Best Stairlifts UK 2026: Our Top 5 Compared
Key points
- No single stairlift is best for everyone. The right one depends on how your stairs turn, how wide they are and how much the rider weighs.
- Tight straight flights: Handicare 1100, which sits just 16 cm out from the wall. Reconditioned ones start at £1,695.
- Stairs with bends: Access BDD Flow X from £4,995 reconditioned, or the Platinum Ultimate from £5,495 when the turns are especially awkward.
- Riders above 25 stone: Handicare 1000 XXL, rated to 31.5 stone, new from £3,995.
- All five prices on this page cover the lift, fitting and VAT. New lifts carry three years of parts and labour cover; reconditioned lifts carry two.
The short answer
Ask us which stairlift is best and our honest reply is another question: what are your stairs like? For a cramped straight flight we usually suggest the Handicare 1100. Where the staircase bends, the Access BDD Flow X is our first choice, and the Platinum Ultimate takes over when the bends are too sharp for most rails. Heavier riders are best served by the Handicare 1000 XXL, and if the stairs are simple and money is tight, a reconditioned Acorn 130 does the job for the least outlay.
A semi-detached house with one clean flight and a Victorian terrace with a winder at the top need very different machines, so we have grouped our picks by the problem each one solves rather than by brand. Every model we fit is listed with weights and prices in our full stairlift comparison, if you would like the wider view.
How we chose these five
We are not tied to one maker. We fit lifts from Acorn, Brooks, Handicare, Platinum, Access BDD, Bruno and Stannah, which lets us pick for the staircase rather than for a sales target. The five below are the models that answer the questions we hear most in surveys: will anything fit stairs this narrow, can a lift follow these bends, what about a heavier rider, and what is the least I can spend on something reliable. Specifications come from the manufacturers and their UK dealers; we have not given anything a star rating.
1. Best for narrow stairs: Handicare 1100
Reconditioned from £1,695. New from £2,495.
On a tight straight staircase every centimetre matters, and this is where the 1100 earns its place. Its rail stands only 16 cm proud of the wall, and with the seat, arms and footrest tucked away the whole unit is 32 cm deep. Instead of a toothed track it climbs on friction rollers, so the rail stays smooth and clean with nothing greasy for clothes or fingers to catch on. It is rated for riders up to 22 stone, copes with flights as steep as 45 degrees and arrives with two remote controls.
Choose it if: you have a terraced house or a slim straight flight that others still need to walk up. For measuring tips, see our guide to stairlifts for narrow stairs; for the full shortlist of slim models, our narrow stairlifts page.

2. Best for curved stairs: Access BDD Flow X
Reconditioned from £4,995. New from £7,195.
Curved staircases are where cheaper rails struggle, because a seat that stays fixed while the rail twists can push your knees into the banister. The Flow X avoids that by turning and levelling the seat as it rides, so you stay facing comfortably forward through each bend. Its single rail can go on the wall side or the banister side, it needs a staircase only 61 cm wide, and it takes riders up to 125 kg, which is 19 st 10 lb. An optional call button built into the armrest can alert up to three people if you need help on the way.
Choose it if: your stairs have a half landing, a bend or winders, especially if they are narrow as well. When the budget is tighter, a reconditioned Platinum Ergo Curve starts at £3,995. Our curved stairlift price guide explains why bends add to the cost.

3. Best for difficult staircases: Platinum Ultimate
Reconditioned from £5,495. New from £6,995.
Some staircases defeat most curved lifts, and the Ultimate was designed with those in mind. It rides a single round tube that can follow some layouts other rails cannot, and because the tube begins on the bottom tread instead of the hall floor, it does not jut out into the hallway. It can be set to travel facing forwards, the footrest folds and unfolds under power as standard, and a powered seat swivel is available. The standard version takes 19 stone; a heavy duty version lifts the limit to 25 stone.
Choose it if: another company has said your stairs are too awkward, the turns are very tight, or you want the neatest rail in the hallway. For the tightest staircases of all, read our guide to stairlifts for spiral stairs.

4. Best for higher user weights: Handicare 1000 XXL
New from £3,995.
If the rider is over 25 stone, choice narrows quickly. The 1000 XXL is rated to 31.5 stone, the most of any straight lift we fit, yet it keeps the same slim aluminium track as the everyday 1000 instead of a bulky industrial rail. Charging points at both ends of the flight mean it tops up wherever it is parked. The family comes in three strengths: the standard 1000 for up to 21.5 stone, the XL for up to 25 stone from £2,995, and the XXL. If the stairs curve, the Bruno CRE 2110 is the heavy duty option, rated to 30 stone.
Choose it if: the rider is above 25 stone, or close enough that you want a safety margin. Our heavy duty stairlift guide sets out every high-capacity model side by side.

5. Best value for simple straight stairs: Acorn 130
Reconditioned from £1,595.
For one plain flight and a careful budget, the Acorn 130 is hard to beat. It is quick for our engineers to install, takes riders up to 20 stone (127 kg) and folds back to 31 cm. At the top, the seat turns and locks at 45 or 90 degrees so you can step off onto the landing rather than towards the stairs. Batteries mean a power cut will not leave you stranded halfway, and if the bottom of the rail would block a doorway, a hinged section lifts it clear.
Choose it if: your staircase is straight with no landings and you want the lowest cost. We offer the 130 reconditioned, covered for two years on parts and labour. Our guide to new and reconditioned stairlifts compares the two routes.

Also worth considering
- Perch stairlifts (from £1,795): for anyone whose knees or hips will not bend comfortably, a perch seat lets you lean and half-stand as you ride. The Handicare 1000 Perch model starts at £1,995 reconditioned. Our perch stairlift guide covers who they suit.
- A reconditioned curved lift (from £3,395): the most affordable way onto a bending staircase. Browse our reconditioned stairlifts.
- Platinum Ergo Outdoor (from £2,995): built to sit outside on garden steps or the climb to a front door.

What to check before you choose
- Does the staircase turn at all? A single winder or a half landing rules out a straight rail and means a made-to-measure curved one. Our straight or curved guide shows how to tell.
- How much room is left when it is folded? On slim stairs, the folded depth decides whether the rest of the household can still pass safely.
- Who is riding, and how? Pick a weight rating with some headroom, and think about a perch seat if sitting down and standing up is painful.
- What happens at the top? A seat that swivels to face the landing makes getting off much safer, so check whether it comes as standard.
- Is there a door at the foot of the stairs? A hinged or sliding end section can stop the rail blocking it.
Help with the cost
Many buyers pay less than the prices above. If the rider has a long-term illness or disability, the stairlift can be bought without VAT, which removes a sixth of the price. The local council may also contribute through a Disabled Facilities Grant. Our stairlift grants guide walks through both, and our stairlift price guide lists the starting price for every model we fit.
Frequently asked questions
What is the best stairlift for a curved staircase?
For most bending staircases our first choice is the Access BDD Flow X, from £4,995 reconditioned, because it turns and levels the seat through each bend. If the turns are very tight, the Platinum Ultimate, from £5,495 reconditioned, can follow shapes most other rails cannot.
Which stairlift takes up the least room on narrow stairs?
On a straight flight, the Handicare 1100. Its rail sits about 16 cm from the wall and the folded lift is about 32 cm deep. Prices start at £1,695 reconditioned and £2,495 new. If the narrow stairs also bend, the Flow X needs a staircase only 61 cm wide.
Is there a stairlift for someone over 25 stone?
Yes. On straight stairs the Handicare 1000 XXL is rated to 31.5 stone and costs from £3,995 new. On curved stairs we fit the Bruno CRE 2110, rated to 30 stone, and the heavy duty Platinum Ultimate, rated to 25 stone.
What is the cheapest way to get a stairlift fitted?
A reconditioned Acorn 130 on a plain straight staircase, which starts at £1,595 including fitting and VAT and comes with two years of parts and labour cover.
Should I buy new or reconditioned?
Reconditioned lifts are fully refurbished and safety checked, cost far less and are covered for two years on parts and labour. New lifts give a wider choice of models and finishes and are covered for three years. Many people choose reconditioned for a straight flight and new for a complex curve.
Can I get help paying for a stairlift?
Often, yes. A rider living with a disability or long-term illness can usually buy the lift VAT-free, and councils can part-fund adaptations like this with a Disabled Facilities Grant. Our grants guide covers who qualifies and how to start.
